              "  Three Variations on Plum Blossom."

The best classic Chinese music on plum blossom is known to be a flute music first played by Huan Yin of East Jin Dynasty.

The historical account behind this classical piece tells of Huan Yin, when he met and played it, for Wang Hui-Zhi.

Huan Yin was an eminent high-ranking general in Southern China; [ he loved and understood the essence of music / was crowned as “The Sage of Flute” ]

yet, was also very humble and approachable.

Wang Huizhi was a brilliant and arrogant scholar at that time. , the son of legendary Wang Xizhi,  the “Sage of Calligraphy. ”

Whilst visiting Jiankang, the capital of East Jin, his boat was tied up by the riverbank and Huan Yin, happened to pass by.

One of his guests announced “Oh, that’s general Huan Yin! ” so he sent his servant to Huan Yin, saying: “ I heard you are good at flute, please play for me.”

He accordingly obliged and after playing " Three Variations on Plum Blossom, " immediately left again, on his wagon.

So, although the two met, but did not even talk;

it was a rare chance for them and it is this unexpected encounter of Huan Yin and Wang Huizhi that lead to the birth of eternal masterpiece.

It was also adapted, into a Guqin version later on, too.
