Seven well-known scholars and artists - namely:


  • Ruan Xian - playing the ran ( lute )


  • Liu Liang - drinking wine.


  • Xiang Xiu - sleeping.


  • Xi Kang - playing the qin.


  • Ruan Ji - whistling.


  • Shau Tao - drinking wine;      and


  • Wang Rong - balancing a ruyi (wand);


who all lived around Loyang in the period 210 - 307 - engaging themselves in these pursuits, which included "pure conversation".




清談 qingtan: "clear talk" or "pure conversation".
